বুলেটিনে বলা হয়, উত্তর-পূর্ব বঙ্গোপসাগর ও তৎসংলগ্ন এলাকায় অবস্থানরত ঘূর্ণিঝড় ‘গিরি’ সামান্য উত্তরপূর্ব দিকে অগ্রসর হয়ে একই এলাকায় অবস্থান করছে।

ঘূর্ণিঝড়টি শুক্রবার দুপুর ১২টায় টেকনাফের ২২৫ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে, কক্সবাজার সমুদ্র বন্দরের ২৯৫ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে, চট্টগ্রাম সমুদ্র বন্দরের ৩৯০ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণে এবং মংলা সমুদ্র বন্দরের ৫২০ কিলোমিটার দক্ষিণ-দক্ষিণপূর্বে অবস্থান করছিলো।

বুলেটিনে জানানো হয়, ঘূর্ণিঝড় কেন্দ্রের ৬৪ কিলোমিটারের মধ্যে বাতাসের একটানা গতিবেগ ঘণ্টায় ৮৯ কিলোমিটার, যা দমকা অথবা ঝড়োহাওয়ার আকারে ১১৫ কিলোমিটার পর্যন্ত বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে।

এতে বলা হয়, ঘূর্ণিঝড় ও পূর্ণিমার প্রভাবে কক্সবাজার এবং তার অদূরবর্তী দ্বীপ ও চরসমূহ স্বাভাবিক জোয়ারের চেয়ে ৬-৮ ফুট অধিক উচ্চতার জলোচ্ছ্বাসে প্লাবিত হতে পারে। একই প্রভাবে চট্টগ্রাম, নোয়াখালী, ফেনী, লক্ষ্মীপুর, ভোলা, বরিশাল, পটুয়াখালী এবং তাদের অদূরবর্তী দ্বীপ ও চরসমূহ স্বাভাবিক জোয়ারের চেয়ে ৩-৫ ফুট অধিক উচ্চতার জলোচ্ছ্বাসে প্লাবিত হতে পারে।

সাগর খুবই উত্তাল থাকবে। উত্তর বঙ্গোপসাগর ও গভীর সাগরে অবস্থানরত সব মাছধরা নৌকা ও ট্রলারকে পরবর্তী নির্দেশ না দেওয়া পর্যন্ত নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ে থাকতে বলা হয়েছে বুলেটিনে।

About 60 percent of Arvind’s denim are exported to Bangladesh as raw materials for the RMG industry, according to Akhtar.

“So we find setting up a factory here as a logical forward movement.”

Replying to a query, Akhtar said that the cost advantage in terms of labour and the large textile sector lured them to start manufacturing in Bangladesh.

“We expect the market to grow by 12 percent by 2015 which would account for 500 million metres of denim annually and we want to grab a 30 percent market share.”

At present, the denim usage of Bangladesh stands at 300 million meters.

সুরঞ্জিত বলেন, “সালাউদ্দিন কাদের চৌধুরী বলেছেন, খালেদা জিয়ার সেনানিবাসের বাড়ি নিয়ে সরকার, আদালত কিংবা রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর কিছু করার নেই। এই বিতর্কের সুরাহা করার এখতিয়ার কেবল সেনাবাহিনীরই.. এই বক্তব্যের অর্থ হলো সেনাবাহিনীকে আলাদা গোত্র হিসাবে চিহ্নিত করা।”

এই বক্তব্যের মাধ্যমে সাকা চৌধুরী রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনা সংক্রান্ত বিষয়ে সেনাবাহিনীকে ‘ক্ষুব্ধ ও উত্তেজিত’ করার চেষ্টা করেছেন বলেও অভিযোগ করেন তিনি।

ঢাকা সেনানিবাসের মইনুল রোডের বাড়িটি খালেদাকে ছেড়ে দিতে ১৩ অক্টোবর আদালতের আদেশের পর চলমান আলোচনার মধ্যেই বিএনপি স্থায়ী কমিটির সদস্য সালাউদ্দিন কাদের চৌধুরী রোববার সাংবাদিকদের কাছে এ বিষয়ে তার মতামত তুলে ধরেন।

সালাউদ্দিন বলেন, “এই বাড়িটি নিয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রী কিংবা সরকারের মাথা ঘামানোর বিষয় নয়। এনিয়ে আমাদের রাজনীতিবিদদেরও বির্তকে যাওয়া ঠিক নয়। এটা সেনাবাহিনীর ওপরই ছেড়ে দেওয়া উচিত।”

সুরঞ্জিত এ ব্যাপারে পরিষ্কার করে বলেন, নির্বাহী বিভাগের একটি অংশ হচ্ছে সেনাবাহিনী এবং প্রতিরক্ষা মন্ত্রণালয়ের মাধ্যমে সরকার এই প্রতিষ্ঠানটি পরিচালনা করে।

তিনি প্রশ্ন রাখেন, “রাষ্ট্রের তিনটি বিভাগ- আইন, নির্বাহী ও বিচার বিভাগ থেকে সেনাবাহিনীকে আলাদা করার ধারণা তিনি কোত্থেকে পেলেন?”

“সংবিধান অনুসারে প্রজাতন্ত্রের মালিক জনগণ। আর সেনাবাহিনী প্রজাতন্ত্রের নির্বাহী বিভাগের একটি অংশ,” বলেন সুরঞ্জিত।

খালেদা জিয়াকে সেনানিবাসের বাড়ি থেকে উচ্ছেদে সামরিক ভূমি ও সেনানিবাস অধিদপ্তরের দেওয়া নির্দেশ ঠেকাতে বিএনপি আদালতে গিয়েছে বলেও উল্লেখ করেন তিনি।

সুরঞ্জিত বলেন, “তিনি এমন সময় এ মন্তব্য করলেন যখন আইনি প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে বিষয়টি চূড়ান্ত হয় নি। যা আদালত অবমাননার শামিল।”

এ ব্যাপারে আদালতে রায় তাদের পক্ষে গেলে বিএনপি এটাকে আইনের শাসনের উদাহরণ হিসাবে আখ্যায়িত করত বলেও তিনি মন্তব্য করেন।

জ্যেষ্ঠ এই আওয়ামী লীগ নেতা আরো বলেন, “আদালতের রায় তাদের বিপক্ষে যাওয়ায় তারা এখন খালেদা জিয়ার সেনানিবাসের বাড়ি নিয়ে বিতর্কের সুরাহা আদালতের বাইরে করতে চায়।”

তিনি বলেন, হাইকোর্টের দেওয়া রায় চ্যালেঞ্জ করে বিএনপি সুপ্রিম কোর্টে যেতে পারে।

সেনানিবাসের মইনুল সড়কের বাড়ি ছাড়তে সরকারের দেওয়া নোটিশের বৈধতা চ্যালেঞ্জ করে খালেদার করা রিট আবেদন খারিজ করে গত ১৩ অক্টোবর রায় দেয় হাইকোর্ট।

২০০৯ সালের ২০ এপ্রিল খালেদা জিয়াকে সেনানিবাসের বাড়ি ছাড়ার নোটিশ দেয় সামরিক ভূমি ও সেনানিবাস অধিদপ্তর। এর বৈধতা চ্যালেঞ্জ করে একই বছরের ৩ মে খালেদা জিয়া হাইকোর্টে রিট আবেদন করেন।

The incident, which was sparked centring a conference of the BNP youth front’s unit, left 30 persons including four police personnel wounded.

The injured police personnel are Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Station Mohiuddin Mahmud, sub-inspectors (SI) Mosaddekul Maula and Md Shahjahan, and a havildar.

Police picked up 15 persons on charges of involvement in the incident, and recovered a revolver, a bullet, and a cocktail from the spot.

During the clash, 10 cocktails were exploded and at least 20 shots were fired by a faction of Jubo Dal activists, some of whom were in black masks.

Students of educational institutions and pedestrians ran for cover as the feuding groups chased each other. Shops pulled their shutters down. Police fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Police, leaders and workers of Jubo Dal, and other witnesses said followers of Comilla district unit BNP General Secretary Aminur Rashid Yasin, and supporters of his rival — former organising secretary of the party unit Monirul Haque Sakku, took positions against each other at the Town Hall in the morning.

The clash started around 12:00pm when Sakku’s followers threw a Molotov cocktail at the rear of a microbus carrying the organisation’s central leaders including its President Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal. The vehicle was entering the Town Hall Auditorium premises, the venue of the conference scheduled to start at 10:00am.

They then exploded nine more cocktails at the Chowrangi Crossing area.

Some of Sakku’s followers were wearing black masks and were armed with pistols, LGs, revolvers, and sawed-off rifles. They fired shots at the Town Hall ground that was empty by then.

At least 20 gun shots were heard. Two young men in jeans and T-shirts were seen firing guns, but their identities could not be known immediately.

At one stage, supporters of Yasin, armed with sticks, chased their rivals, sparking an exchange of brickbats.

Later police came to the scene and lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the warring groups.

Sakku’s supporters Milon, Ferdaus, and Russell were hit by bullets, and were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Mazharul Islam, a fourth year accounting student of Comilla Government College, was hit by a bullet in the chest.

OC Mohiuddin Mahmud was injured in the leg, SI Mosaddekul Maula was injured in the head and abdomen, SI Md Shahjahan and the havildar were injured in the hands. Four pedestrians were also injured, who were admitted to local clinics.

Police recovered an abandoned revolver from the front of the district BNP office.

Rapid Action Battalion arrived at the spot around 1:30pm.

District Jubo Dal Joint Convener Ashikur Rahman Mahmud Wasim, a supporter of Yasin, said, “Our rivals opened fire in broad daylight in a bid to foil the conference, but their attempt failed.”

The unit’s First Joint Convener Nazrul Islam Bhuiyan, a follower of Sakku, said, “I was in charge of conducting the conference. I don’t know what happened outside.”

Police picked up 15 persons from the conference venue on charges of involvement in the incident, who are Md Sumon, 20, Mostafizur Rahman, 35, Hridoy, 20, Rony, 25, Ripon, 20, Abul Hasan, 24, Monir Hossain, 24, Yasin, 20, Pavel, 28, Jahir, 22, Rafiqul Islam, 22, Anu Miah, 35, Rubel, 25, Kishore Kumar Debnath, 35, and Ripon, 20.

On June 18, 1921 Nazrul married Nargis. Ustad Aftabuddin Khan, Shahabuddin Bayati, Baul poet Musa Shah and the family members of Indra Kumar Sengupta attended the wedding. But for some reason Nazrul was disturbed and left the house of Ali Akbar Khan on the night of his wedding. Nazrul moved in with Indra Kumar Sengupta and his family in Comilla town. Giribala Devi (Sengupta’s aunt) and her daughter Ashalata alias Pramila Devi also lived with the Senguptas. Nazrul was unwell and stayed there for almost three weeks. The Senguptas looked after the poet and Nazrul was gradually inclined towards Pramila.

Upon hearing the news of Nazrul’s illness, on July 6 1921, Muzaffar Ahmed, friend of Ali Akbar Khan, took Nazrul back to Calcutta (now Kolkata). The same year in November, Nazrul returned to Comilla and stayed at Giribala Devi’s residence. During his visit, Nazrul met with Congress leader Ashrafuddin Chowdhury, Basanta Kumar Majumder, Motahar Hossain Chowdhury, Jaan-e-Alam Chowdhury, Atindra Mohan Roy Chowdhury, Sachin Dev Burman and Ustad Muhammad Khusru.

On November 21, 1921, the Prince of Wales visited India, and in protest of this, a daylong ‘hartal’ (strike) was observed in Comilla as everywhere else in the sub-continent. People from all walks of life observed the ‘hartal’ and Nazrul sang �Bhikkha dao, bhikkha dao, phiria chao ogo purobashi, santan aaj upobashi.�

Nazrul was arrested and sent to Calcutta police station. Later, he was freed from police custody.

In the month of February, in 1922, Nazrul returned to Comilla and stayed here for five months. During this stay, he wrote several poems including “Priyar Roop,” “Baishakhi,” “Pralay Ullash” and “Chiro chena.”

On August 11, 1922, Nazrul’s famous publication �Dhumketu� came out. The rulers did not take the poet’s scathing criticism of the British rule kindly. Police looked for Nazrul, but he was then at the residence of Giribala Devi in Comilla. This was his fourth visit to Comilla. Police arrested Nazrul in front of the residence of Jogendranath Dutta in Comilla town on November 23, 1922.

He was sent to Alipore jail. After being freed from jail on December 23 1923, Nazrul again came to the home of Giribala Debi and stayed there for some days. On April 24 1924, Nazrul married Pramila Devi. Nazrul wrote many poems during his stay in Comilla. In Daulatpur, Nazrul composed 10 songs. The bard wrote “Akarun priya,” “Shesher gaan,” “Bedonamoni” and Lakkhichhara.”

Places in Comilla, bearing the memories of the National Poet, are now facing severe negligence. No steps to maintain these places have been taken in the past two decades. People of Comilla have repeatedly demanded naming the proposed Comilla University after Kazi Nazrul Islam.

It may be mentioned that some local influential people have allegedly constructed a building by filling up a pond (opposite Farida Bidyayatan) belonging to Pramila Devi’s family. The occupiers have removed the memorial plaque from the place. A public dumpster has been placed next to the memorial plaque at Ranirdighipar. No memorial sign exists at Rajganj from where the poet was arrested by the British police in 1921.
